BUY WITH CARE

Decent buy, but the fuel pump recall needs a hard look first.

Before you buy

Three things, in order. Ten minutes of work, standing at the car.

  1. 1
Run the VIN for open recalls

3 open — all free fixes. Confirm each is closed before you hand over money.

  2. 2
    Test-drive checklist
    • Run the VIN through Toyota's recall lookup and confirm 20V682000 (and its predecessor 20V-012) is complete.
    • Fill the tank on the test drive and watch for the pump shutting off early; ask the seller how many gallons it takes and the real-world range they get.
    • 4-cyl: Accelerate gently from a full stop and from a 5-10 mph roll and feel for a lag followed by a lurch, plus harsh 1-2 / 2-3 shifts.
  3. 3
    Get a pre-purchase inspection

An hour with a mechanic on the items above is the cheapest insurance you’ll buy.
