THINK TWICE

Stalling and a "Reduced Engine Power" limp mode is the defining safety complaint on the 1.5L turbo (LYX) 3rd-gen Equinox, and it runs across the whole 2018-2024 range. FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM and ENGINE are the two largest complaint components, and their texts describe the same event: the car suddenly loses power or stalls -- often at road speed and without warning -- frequently with a "Reduced Engine Power" or "Engine Power Reduced" dash message. Owners and dealers trace it to several different mechanisms rather than one: low fuel-rail pressure / fuel-pump delivery (code P129F), the turbocharger and charge-air system (charge-air cooler, CAC shutter), and a charge-pipe / intake hose that can work loose. Recall 23V013000 (2021-2022 Equinox and 2022 GMC Terrain) confirms one of these mechanisms federally -- a fuel-pump module that may not consistently supply enough fuel, causing an engine stall -- but it does not cover every affected year, so a clean VIN on that recall does not rule the symptom out.

Check — Test-drive from a cold start and pull hard up an on-ramp to highway speed, watching for hesitation, stumble, a stall, or a "Reduced Engine Power" message; scan for stored codes (e.g. P129F low fuel pressure) and check-engine history. Ask whether the fuel pump, charge-air cooler, or turbocharger has been replaced. Run the VIN for recall 23V013000 on a 2021-2022 car, but treat the stall risk as generation-wide regardless.

Two separate loss-of-propulsion recalls cover the early 3rd-gen Equinox. Recall 20V668000 (2018-2020 Equinox, among many other GM models) is for a start/stop accumulator endcap that may be missing bolts, which can leak transmission fluid and progress to a loss of propulsion; a fluid leak near an ignition source also adds a fire risk. Recall 17V516000 (2018 Equinox and GMC Terrain, plus 2017-2018 Acadia) is for a right front intermediate driveshaft that may fracture and separate while driving, causing a loss of propulsion -- and if it separates while parked on a grade without the park brake set, the vehicle can roll away. Both fail during normal use, not only in a crash, and both are free VIN-verifiable fixes.

Check — Run the VIN through GM's recall lookup and confirm 20V668000 (2018-2020) and 17V516000 (2018) are both closed before buying; if either is open, have it completed before daily-driving. Set the parking brake whenever parking on a slope.

Two fuel-system fire recalls also touch the early 3rd-gen Equinox. Recall 18V358000 (2018 Equinox, among many 2015-2018 GM models) is for a high-pressure fuel pump that may detach from its mounting flange and damage the high-pressure fuel line, which can leak fuel and raise the risk of a fire. Recall 19V667000 (2019-2020 Equinox all-wheel-drive) is for a fuel tank that may have an improperly sealed seam, allowing fuel to leak along the seam near the fuel inlet -- again a fire risk. Neither is crash-conditional; the leak can develop in normal use. Both are free VIN-verifiable fixes.

Check — Run the VIN through GM's recall lookup and confirm 18V358000 (2018) and 19V667000 (2019-2020 AWD) are complete; investigate any fuel smell. These are latent recalls, so a leak may not have appeared yet even if the work is still undone.
