The Lineartronic CVT is the recurring powertrain risk across the models that share it: POWER TRAIN is 11% of Outback (644/5,895), 12% of Legacy (182/1,457), 7% of Impreza (91/1,388) and 15% of 2019 Ascent (86/555) federal complaints, and the narratives repeatedly describe the CVT shuddering, hesitating, jerking or whining and then losing drive power. It is largely a warranty/class-action matter, not a recall (the exception is the Ascent drive-chain recall).

Check — Test-drive deliberately: from a stop and at light throttle, and holding a steady 20-45 mph, feel for shudder, hesitation, jerk or whine, and any hard or delayed engagement. Check the CVT fluid (clean, not burnt), and ask for CVT service, reprogram, or replacement history and any remaining extended CVT coverage.

Recall 21V955000 covers 2019-2020 Ascent and 2020 Legacy and Outback vehicles (~198,255 units): a Transmission Control Unit programming error may allow the clutch to engage before the CVT drive chain is fully clamped, so the chain can slip and break, causing a loss of drive power and a crash risk. Dealers reprogram the TCU, inspect the stored data for chain slip and visually inspect the chain guide, replacing the transmission if damage is found, free of charge. It includes and supersedes the earlier 2019-Ascent recall 19V855000. On the 2019 Ascent these POWER TRAIN failures skew very early in life (complaint median ~17k miles), consistent with this defect.

Check — Run the VIN through Subaru's recall lookup and confirm 21V955000 (and any earlier 19V855000) is complete on a 2019-2020 Ascent or 2020 Legacy/Outback; a car showing any chain-slip symptom or loss of drive power may need the transmission replaced, not just a reprogram.
