Fuel dilution of the engine oil is the 1.5L turbo's defining complaint, and the 2017-2018 CR-V is its epicenter. ENGINE is the number-one complaint component on the 2017-2022 CR-V (1,266 of 8,374 federal complaints), and 739 of them carry the dilution signature -- gasoline collecting in the crankcase, the dipstick reading above the full mark, and the oil or cabin smelling of gas -- overwhelmingly in the 2017 and 2018 model years. Unburned fuel from the direct-injected 1.5T washes past the rings during cold, short-trip running and thins the oil. Honda ran a product-update campaign for 2017-18 CR-V 1.5L turbo cars sold in cold-weather states (TSBs 10147181, 10151673): control-unit software updates, plus an A/C control unit change (10152769), meant to warm the engine faster and drive the fuel back off. No NHTSA safety recall covers it.

Check — Pull the dipstick: oil above the full mark or smelling strongly of gasoline is the tell. Ask for oil-change records -- short-trip cold-climate cars need them more often -- and confirm the product-update software / A/C control unit work was completed. Worst on cars that live on short winter commutes; a highway-driven example is far less affected.
