The fifth-generation Odyssey's power sliding doors are a recurring trouble spot, and two safety recalls reach the early years. Recall 18V795000 (2018-2019): the power sliding door rear latch assemblies may stick and not latch to the strikers, so a door can open while the van is moving. Recall 20V437000 (2018-2020): water can enter the outer door-handle cables and freeze in cold weather, again preventing the sliding-door latches from securing and letting a door open while moving. Beyond the recalls, owners across the generation report sliding doors that will not latch or close fully, reopen after closing, bind or stop mid-travel, or fail a latch actuator -- an ejection or injury risk with children aboard.

Check — On a 2018-2019 (or 2018-2020) example, run the VIN through the recall lookup and confirm 18V795000 and 20V437000 are closed. Cycle both power doors several times open and closed, watch that each cinches fully to the striker, and listen for grinding or hesitation; test the manual mode too. Ask whether either latch or the handle cables have been replaced.

The Honda Sensing driver-assistance suite draws the single largest body of complaints on the fifth-generation Odyssey. The recurring theme is uncommanded ("phantom") braking: owners report the automatic emergency braking or collision-mitigation system applying the brakes -- sometimes hard -- when there is nothing ahead, often triggered by overpasses, road seams, metal plates, or oncoming traffic, and some say they cannot override it with the accelerator. A related report is the whole suite (AEB, forward-collision and lane systems, adaptive cruise) dropping out with warning lights. Uncommanded braking in traffic is a rear-end-collision risk. Honda has addressed some cases with software updates rather than a blanket recall; the complaints are heaviest on the 2018-2020 cars but continue into later years.

Check — On the test drive, use adaptive cruise and note any braking with no vehicle ahead, especially under overpasses or over road seams; ask the seller whether phantom braking has occurred and whether the sensor/camera software has been updated. Have any Honda Sensing service bulletins or calibrations applied and any windshield-related recalibration confirmed.

Two later engine safety recalls reach the third-generation J35Y6 (VCM) V6 in the 2017-2019 Ridgeline. Recall 23V751000 (2024): a connecting-rod bearing may wear and seize, damaging the engine and causing it to run improperly or stall -- it covers the 2017 and 2019 Ridgeline (and 2016/2018-2019 Pilot, 2018-2019 Odyssey and several Acura models beyond these windows); dealers inspect and repair or replace the engine free. Recall 19V298000 (2019): the timing-belt teeth may separate from the belt and stall the engine -- it covers the 2019 Ridgeline (and 2018-2019 Pilot, 2019 Odyssey, plus Acura models); dealers inspect and replace the belt, and inspect the engine, free. A snapped belt matters because the J35 is an interference engine on a scheduled timing-belt interval, unlike Honda's four-cylinders.

Check — On a 2017-2019 Ridgeline (or a later Pilot/Odyssey), run the VIN and confirm both 23V751000 (rod bearing) and 19V298000 (timing belt) are closed. Independently, confirm the timing belt has been serviced on schedule -- the J35 is an interference design, so a broken belt means bent valves, not just a tow.

The fifth-generation Odyssey's automatic transmission is a leading complaint area. Lower trims use a ZF-sourced 9-speed and the top trims (Touring/Elite) Honda's own 10-speed; both draw many reports of harsh or jerky up- and down-shifts, clunking, and a hesitation or lag when accelerating from a stop or rolling on the throttle, with some owners describing the van briefly failing to engage or to accelerate as expected. Separately, recall 19V299000 covers certain 2018-2019 cars in which a loose battery terminal or degraded battery can make the transmission control unit reboot and shift into Park, which can damage the parking rod -- a damaged rod can let the vehicle roll when parked. The driveability complaints span the whole generation; the recall is a discrete 2018-2019 item with a free fix.

Check — On the test drive, work the transmission through slow starts, stop-and-go, and roll-on acceleration and feel for harsh shifts, clunks, or a hesitation before the van moves. On a 2018-2019 example, run the VIN through Honda's or NHTSA's recall lookup and confirm 19V299000 (battery/TCU/parking rod) is closed. Ask about any transmission software updates or repairs already performed.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM is the top complaint component on the fifth-generation Odyssey, and the recurring story is an unstable infotainment head unit: crackling or popping from the speakers, "network connection lost" errors, the center screen going black, and the system rebooting itself while driving -- which also blanks the rearview camera and navigation. Recall 23V431000 covers 2018-2023 Odyssey vehicles in which a faulty Media Oriented Systems Transport (MOST) communication cable connector can keep the rearview camera image from appearing, a backing-up hazard; owners describe symptoms that match. The head-unit instability itself is mostly a comfort and usability problem, but the lost backup camera is a safety-relevant loss.

Check — Sit with the infotainment system running for a while: check for audio popping, screen blackouts, reboots, and that the rearview camera image reliably appears when reverse is selected. On a 2018-2023 example, run the VIN and confirm rearview-camera recall 23V431000 (MOST cable connector) is closed. Ask whether the head unit has been replaced or software-updated.
