Coolant loss and overheating are the defining failure of GM's 1.4L Turbo. ENGINE is the number-one complaint component on both the Chevrolet Cruze (2011-2019) and Sonic (2012-2020), and coolant is the dominant thread within it: 556 federal complaint texts describe coolant leaks and overheating, most tracing to a leaking thermostat / water-outlet housing, water pump, or coolant hose that lets the engine lose coolant and overheat -- often with the temperature gauge climbing or an "A/C off due to high engine temperature" message as the first warning. Repeat failures of the plastic thermostat housing are common, and a bad overheat can crack the head or warp the block. No federal recall covers this cooling-system defect; it stands on the complaint record.

Check — Cold, check the coolant level and look for dried coolant crust or weeping around the thermostat / water-outlet housing and water pump. On the test drive watch the temperature gauge and any overheat or "A/C off" message. Ask about prior thermostat-housing, water-pump, or head-gasket work, and assume the plastic housing may need replacing again.

The 1.4L Turbo's turbocharger is a common and expensive failure. 143 federal complaint texts on the Cruze and Sonic describe the turbocharger failing or being replaced and its symptoms -- a sudden drop into "reduced engine power" limp mode, whistling, whining, or grinding from the turbo, and blue smoke. Turbo life on this engine is shortened by the same faults that dog it elsewhere: oil consumption and a failure-prone PCV diaphragm built into the valve cover (which also produces a vacuum-leak whistle, a rough idle, and oil leaks) starve the turbo of clean oil, and running the engine low on coolant cooks it. No federal recall covers the turbocharger or the PCV/valve-cover diaphragm; they stand on the complaint record.

Check — On the test drive, feel for a sudden drop into "reduced engine power" limp mode and listen for a whistle, whine, or grinding from the turbo. Check for blue smoke on hard acceleration and for oil in the intake or intercooler piping. Ask whether the turbo -- or the valve cover / PCV -- has already been replaced, and verify oil-change history.
