THINK TWICE

Serious stuff on record — the rod bearings. Price the risk, or pass.

Before you buy

Three things, in order. Ten minutes of work, standing at the car.

  1. 1
Run the VIN for open recalls

3 open — all free fixes. Confirm each is closed before you hand over money.

    Check the VIN →
  2. 2
    Test-drive checklist
    • Listen for a metallic knock that tracks engine rpm, especially on a cold start, and check the oil level and service records.
    • Confirm via the VIN that EVERY open recall is closed, not just the engine recall: the fuel-pipe fire recalls (18V907000 / 18V934000) apply specifically to cars whose engine was already replaced, so a repaired engine is not the end of the story.
    • Check the oil level and its condition on the dipstick, and ask the seller how much oil the car uses between changes.
  3. 3
    Get a pre-purchase inspection

An hour with a mechanic on the items above is the cheapest insurance you’ll buy.
