Excessive oil consumption is the defining defect of GM's 2.4L Ecotec (LAF/LEA/LUK). ENGINE is the #1 complaint component on the 2.4-equipped Chevrolet Equinox (2,371 of 6,592 complaints, 36%) and GMC Terrain (1,038 of 3,099, 33%) across 2010-2017, driven largely by oil consumption: worn/undersized piston rings and a PCV design that let the engine burn oil far faster than owners expect. 1,355 Equinox+Terrain complaint texts describe consuming, burning, or losing oil -- often with no low-oil warning until the engine is nearly dry -- leading to knocking, spun bearings, and total engine failure; a smaller set (59) also mention fire. GM addressed this under a class-action settlement (Sloan/Berman v. GM), not a recall.

Check — Check the dipstick before any test drive; ask for oil-change and top-off records and any ring/piston repair history. Watch for blue exhaust smoke on cold start and a low level with no visible leak. Assume you will have to monitor oil between changes.

The 2.4L Ecotec's timing chain stretches early. 778 of 9,691 combined Equinox and Terrain complaints (2010-2017) describe timing-chain rattle -- especially a cold-start rattle -- a check-engine light for camshaft/crankshaft correlation, and in the worst cases a chain that skips or jumps time. The failure is tightly coupled to the oil-consumption defect: running the engine low on oil accelerates chain and guide wear, and many owners report the chain job and the oil-consumption repair together. The 2.4 is an interference engine, so a jumped chain can bend valves and destroy it.

Check — Listen for a rattle at cold start and on light throttle; scan for camshaft/crankshaft position correlation codes (P0008/P0016/P0017) and check-engine history. Ask whether the timing chain has already been replaced, and whether oil consumption was addressed at the same time.
