The EA888 2.0T's defining failure is timing-chain tensioner failure leading to catastrophic engine damage. On the gen1-2 (roughly 2008-2014) engines the chain tensioner can lose tension and let the timing chain skip or jump; because the engine is an interference design, the valves then collide with the pistons and the engine is destroyed -- owners describe a no-start after the tensioner lets go, a tow to the dealer, and a quote to replace the engine ("the timing chain had broken causing catastrophic damage," "destroyed all the engine valves"). Across the three cleanest 2.0T models in the corpus -- VW GTI (2010-2014), VW Tiguan (2009-2017) and Audi A4 (2009-2016) -- 189 of 1,531 federal complaints (12%) name the timing chain or its tensioner, concentrated on the Tiguan (128). VW extended the tensioner warranty rather than issuing a recall, so there is no federal campaign to VIN-check; the failures cluster around 60k-95k miles, not at high mileage.

Check — Ask whether the updated (later-design) chain tensioner has been installed and get documentation. A cold-start rattle from the front of the engine, an illuminated EPC or check-engine light, or any timing-related repair history are warnings. On a gen1-2 2.0T with no tensioner-update record, budget for the job or walk away -- a skipped chain means a new engine.

Direct injection on the EA888 2.0T lets carbon build up on the intake valves over time. Because fuel is sprayed straight into the cylinder rather than over the back of the valve, nothing washes the valves clean, and deposits gradually restrict airflow -- the symptom set is rough idle, misfires, hesitation and a check-engine light, usually past ~60k-80k miles, cured by a walnut-blasting cleaning of the valves. This is inherent to the direct-injection design rather than a defect, and it surfaces only modestly in federal data: 69 complaints across the GTI, Tiguan, Jetta and A4 windows mention carbon, misfires or a rough idle (owners rarely file safety complaints over driveability). Treat it as a maintenance cost to expect on a higher-mileage 2.0T, not a rare failure.

Check — On a higher-mileage 2.0T, listen for a rough or lumpy idle and watch for misfire codes on the test drive; ask whether the intake valves have ever been walnut-blasted. Budget for an intake-valve cleaning as routine maintenance on a direct-injection VW/Audi of this era.
