THINK TWICE

Serious stuff on record — the CP4 pump. Price the risk, or pass.

What to check

Before you buy

Three things, in order. Ten minutes of work, standing at the car.

  1. 1
Run the VIN for open recalls

12 open — all free fixes. Confirm each is closed before you hand over money.

    Check the VIN →
  2. 2
    Test-drive checklist
    • Ask whether the high-pressure (CP4) fuel pump has ever failed or been replaced, and if so confirm the repair included a full fuel-system flush/replacement (a pump-only fix leaves metal in the system).
    • Ask whether the car received the VW/Audi emissions modification (the post-2016 "fix") or was a settlement buyback resold to the public, and get the paperwork.
  3. 3
    Get a pre-purchase inspection

An hour with a mechanic on the items above is the cheapest insurance you’ll buy.
