The defining Honda J-series VCM defect is an oil-consumption / spark-plug-fouling chain: when Variable Cylinder Management deactivates the rear bank to save fuel, oil slips past the rings on the idle cylinders, pools on and fouls the rear spark plugs, and eventually triggers cylinder-specific misfires (P0301/P0302/P0303), a shaking engine, and a blinking check-engine light -- owners report loss of power merging onto highways, and in the worst cases piston-ring or engine replacement. 377 federal ENGINE complaints across the 2011-2017 Odyssey and 2009-2015 Pilot (both V6-only, so unambiguously this engine) and the V6 2008-2017 Accord describe oil consumption, fouled plugs, or VCM misfires. Honda has never recalled this; it has been fought as warranty and class-action matter, and many owners fit an aftermarket VCM disabler.

Check — Ask how often spark plugs and ignition coils have been replaced and how much oil the engine uses between changes -- more than about a quart per 1,000 miles is a red flag. Pull the dipstick, look for a low or fouled reading, and scan for stored or pending misfire codes on the rear (firewall-side) bank. Repeated plug/coil replacement is the tell that VCM oil fouling is active.

Electrical faults are the ninth-generation (2013-2017) Accord's defining problem: ELECTRICAL is the top complaint category at 1,308 of the generation's 5,741 records (about a quarter), and the recurring story is no-start -- weak or failed starter motors and parasitic battery drain, with owners often replacing both more than once. Recall 17V418000 (2013-2016 Accord) covers a battery-sensor case that can admit water and cause an electrical short.

Check — Test repeated cold and hot starts and listen for a grinding or lazy starter; ask whether the starter or battery has been replaced, and how many times. VIN-check recall 17V418000 and confirm it is closed.

Recall 15V121000 (2014-2015 Accord four-cylinder built in narrow mid-2014-to-early-2015 windows; also the 2015 CR-V): connecting rod bolts may have been improperly torqued, which can cause the engine to lose power or leak oil. Honda repairs affected engines free of charge. This is a per-VIN check on a specific build range, not a design-wide flaw of the K24W.

Check — VIN-check recall 15V121000 and confirm completion; on a 2014-2015 four-cylinder, ask about any engine power-loss or oil-leak history.

A separate, non-failure VCM complaint is a felt vibration or shudder as the engine transitions in and out of cylinder deactivation (often labeled ECO), most noticeable at steady highway cruise. Honda damps it with active/electronic front engine mounts, so when the vibration appears owners and dealers commonly replace the front and side motor mounts -- but the shudder frequently returns because it is partly inherent to how VCM cycles the cylinders, and Honda dealers routinely tell owners it is "normal, no fix available." 57 federal complaints on the 2011-2017 Odyssey, 2009-2015 Pilot and 2008-2017 Accord tie the vibration directly to VCM or name a replaced motor/engine mount. It is a comfort and drivability issue, not a safety failure.

Check — On the test drive, hold a steady 40-70 mph on a flat road and feel for a low-frequency shudder or vibration that comes and goes as the engine loafs -- that is VCM cycling. Ask whether motor mounts have already been replaced (and whether it actually cured the vibration); a car on its second set of mounts with the shudder still present points to VCM, not a worn mount. Note whether an aftermarket VCM disabler is fitted.
