Federal complaint texts on these trucks describe a low-brake-fluid warning followed within a few miles by the pedal sinking to the floor and a loss of braking -- a rare case where a defect is scoped to this engine, and a safety item, not a driveability annoyance.

The brake master cylinder on the 3.5L EcoBoost F-150 can leak brake fluid past its seals into the brake booster, reducing front braking and lengthening stopping distance -- and Ford had to recall the same trucks more than once. Recall 20V332000 first covered 2014-2017 3.5L EcoBoost F-150s; 22V150000 then extended to 2016-2018 3.5L EcoBoost F-150 (plus Expedition and Navigator), and 25V236000 followed for 2017-2018 trucks, so an early repair did not always end the problem. Complaint texts describe a low-brake-fluid warning followed within a short distance by the pedal going soft or sinking and reduced braking. This is a safety recall, not a driveability annoyance.

Check — Run the VIN through Ford / NHTSA recall lookup and confirm every applicable master-cylinder recall (20V332000, 22V150000, 25V236000) shows completed -- and be aware a truck fixed under an early campaign may still fall under a later one. Harsh, erratic shifting is the defining complaint on the 10R80 ten-speed automatic Ford fitted to the F-150 from the 2017 model year. Owners describe hard or banging up- and downshifts, a hesitation-then-lurch pulling away from a stop or in stop-and-go traffic, delayed engagement, and gear hunting; it is the single largest issue on these trucks, with well over a thousand power-train complaint texts across 2017-2020 and many naming the ten-speed or 10R80 directly. Ford handled the driveability side with powertrain reflashes and valve-body work in service bulletins (TSB 18-2079 for a harsh/delayed-shift code P0711, and TSB 18-2274 for harsh, bumpy up/downshift and engagement concerns on 2.7L, 3.5L, and 5.0L trucks), and issued separate SAFETY recalls on the same transmission: 18V213000, where a missing roll pin can let the truck roll away despite the lever and display showing Park, and 20V197000, where a shift cable locking clip can leave the transmission in a different gear than the one selected. A truck that lurches unexpectedly in traffic or can move when it reads Park is a safety matter, not just a rough-shifting annoyance.

Check — On the test drive make many low-speed shifts -- repeated stops, crawling in traffic, light and hard acceleration -- and feel for banging, lurching, or a long delay before the gear engages; have the transmission codes scanned (for example P0711) and ask whether the latest reflash / valve-body bulletin work was performed. Run the VIN through Ford / NHTSA recall lookup and confirm the ten-speed Park-function and shift-cable recalls (18V213000, 20V197000) show completed, and check that the truck holds firmly in Park on a slope.

Charge-air-cooler (intercooler) condensation is the signature driveability fault of the gen-1 3.5L EcoBoost: after an extended highway cruise in humid or damp weather, water that pools in the intercooler gets ingested on the next hard acceleration and causes an intermittent misfire/stumble and a brief loss of power under load. Ford issued a run of TSBs for exactly this pattern (12-10-19, 13-8-1, 14-0017, ASI-32227); roughly 100 F-150 EcoBoost complaint texts describe the humid-weather stumble or misfire, several while towing or merging.

Check — On the test drive get the engine to full temperature, then accelerate hard after a sustained cruise (ideally in humid or wet weather) and feel for a stumble or misfire; scan for stored misfire/DTC codes and ask whether the charge-air-cooler condensation TSB work (CAC drain/deflector, PCM recalibration) was performed.

A ticking/tapping or rattle from the engine's top front cover on a cold start (typically 2-5 seconds after a 6-hour-plus cold soak) is the gen-1 3.5L EcoBoost's early warning: it points at cam-phaser and primary timing-chain wear. Ford documented the cold-start front-cover rattle in TSBs 15-0131 and 18-2305, and a worn/stretched primary timing chain (DTC P0016, driveability faults, a dealer repair kit) in TSB 17-0026; owners report chain jobs near 2,500 dollars. 48 F-150 EcoBoost complaint texts mention the timing chain, cam phasers, or the cold-start rattle.

Check — Start the engine genuinely cold (parked overnight) and listen for a 2-5 second rattle from the front of the engine; have the codes scanned for P0016 or cam-timing faults and ask for timing-chain / cam-phaser service records. On a high-mileage EcoBoost budget for an eventual timing-chain job.

On the second-generation EcoBoost engines in this truck -- the 2.7L and the 2017-and-later 3.5L, which share a cam-phaser design -- a tick, tap, or rattle from the top front of the engine on a cold start points at worn variable-cam-timing (VCT) phasers and, left alone, can progress to running problems and, in the worst reports, engine failure. The federal signal is heaviest on the 3.5L, where complaint texts describe a startup rattle, misfire codes, and costly phaser or long-block repairs on trucks with well under a hundred thousand miles. Ford documented the top-of-engine rattle in a technical message (SSM 48272), the VCT / long-block replacement calibration in another (SSM 48055), and ran Customer Satisfaction Program 19B15 (cam-cover torque) on certain 2019 3.5L EcoBoost trucks; there was no recall, so this is a known-issue / bulletin matter that complaint provenance carries. This is a distinct, later engine from the gen-1 3.5L EcoBoost covered elsewhere, whose signature fault was instead humid-weather condensation misfire.

Check — Start the engine genuinely cold, after an overnight soak, and listen for a rattle or tap from the front top of the engine in the first seconds and at idle; have the codes scanned for cam-timing or misfire faults (for example P0016) and ask whether the cam phasers, VCT components, or the cam-cover torque program (19B15) have been addressed. On a higher-mileage EcoBoost budget for eventual phaser work.

The 5.0L Coyote V8 can consume oil, and Ford acknowledged it directly: service bulletins TSB 19-2058 and TSB 19-2365 cover 2018-2020 F-150 trucks with the 5.0L that burn oil -- the later one describes excessive consumption as more than about a quart in roughly three thousand miles -- with no visible external leak. Federal complaint texts on the 2015-2020 F-150 describe adding oil between changes, low-oil and check-engine warnings, and in some cases blue exhaust smoke. Because the consumption leaves no puddle, it is easy to miss until the level runs low enough to threaten the engine. On a high-mileage truck the behavior is fully expressed -- the engine either uses oil or it does not.

Check — Ask how much oil is added between changes and pull the dipstick; look for blue smoke on a hard start and for any low-oil or check-engine history. On a 2018-2020 5.0L ask whether the oil-consumption bulletin (TSB 19-2365) was ever performed. Keeping the oil topped up matters -- running a consuming engine low compounds into far more expensive damage.
