The FB25 flat-four's known defect is excessive oil consumption: 38 of the 2014 Forester's 69 engine complaints name oil consumption. It drove a class action, and Subaru extended the powertrain warranty at the time (long expired). By ~129k a given car has already declared itself -- it either burns oil or it does not.

Check — Check the oil level; ask the seller how much oil it uses between changes; look for the Subaru oil-consumption test in service records. A quart low every 1,000-1,500 miles is a renegotiate-or-walk finding.

The Lineartronic CVT is the second expensive risk: 41 power-train complaints on the 2014 Forester, many describing CVT shudder, hesitation, or jerk. Subaru extended some CVT warranties to 10yr/100k -- a 129k car is past that -- and a CVT replacement is a $4,000-8,000 event.

Check — Check CVT fluid condition; drive for shudder or hesitation from a stop and under light acceleration. Any repeatable shudder is a renegotiate-or-walk finding.

Suspension is actually the #1 complaint area on the 2014 Forester (93 records); 71 mention springs or struts. The front coil springs can corrode and fracture, a known Subaru issue. A low-rust regional history (e.g. a Southern car with a clean underside) helps, but it remains a specific inspection point.

Check — Inspect the front coil springs for corrosion, pitting, and cracking, especially on any car with rust-belt history.

The 2014 Forester carries Takata-era airbag exposure (57 air-bag complaints) plus two VIN-checkable recalls: brake-light-switch recall 19V149000 (2014-2016) and floor-mat interference recall 13V159000 (a mis-made mat edge can catch the pedal). All are free fixes.
