Before you buy

Three things, in order. Ten minutes of work, standing at the car.

  1. 1
Run the VIN for open recalls

  2. 2
    Test-drive checklist
    • V6: Ask how often spark plugs and ignition coils have been replaced and how much oil the engine uses between changes -- more than about a quart per 1,000 miles is a red flag.
    • V6: On the test drive, hold a steady 40-70 mph on a flat road and feel for a low-frequency shudder or vibration that comes and goes as the engine loafs -- that is VCM cycling.
  3. 3
    Get a pre-purchase inspection

An hour with a mechanic on the items above is the cheapest insurance you’ll buy.
