Recall 12V288000 addresses an engine-compartment fire risk on the 2011-2012 Chevrolet Cruze: spilled or dripping oil (such as after an oil change) can collect in the engine shield (bellypan) near hot engine or exhaust surfaces, where the oil and the shield can ignite and burn, causing an engine-compartment fire that could result in injury or death. The remedy modifies the engine shield so fluid cannot contact it (and, on manual-transmission cars, adds protective tape to the power-steering harness). Check — On any 2011-2012 Cruze, VIN-check that 12V288000 is complete and the engine shield was modified. On any 1.4L, keep oil leaks under control (a weeping valve cover or thermostat housing puts flammable fluid near hot surfaces) and investigate any burning smell, smoke, or scorching in the engine bay before buying.
