THINK TWICE

Serious stuff on record — the fire risk. Price the risk, or pass.

What to check

Before you buy

Three things, in order. Ten minutes of work, standing at the car.

  1. 1
Run the VIN for open recalls

4 open — all free fixes. Confirm each is closed before you hand over money.

    Check the VIN →
  2. 2
    Test-drive checklist
    • On any 2011-2012 Cruze, VIN-check that 12V288000 is complete and the engine shield was modified.
    • Cold, check the coolant level and look for dried coolant crust or weeping around the thermostat / water-outlet housing and water pump.
    • On the test drive, feel for a sudden drop into "reduced engine power" limp mode and listen for a whistle, whine, or grinding from the turbo.
  3. 3
    Get a pre-purchase inspection

An hour with a mechanic on the items above is the cheapest insurance you’ll buy.
