THINK TWICE

The one specific flag on the early port-injected 2GR-FE V6 is the VVT-i oil supply hose. Its rubber section hardens and cracks with age and can weep or, worse, rupture -- dumping engine oil in minutes. Owners describe the oil-pressure light and abnormal engine noise, an oil trail "for miles" behind the car, and a dipstick gone bone dry. 279 federal ENGINE complaints across the 2007-2011 Camry V6, 2008-2013 Highlander, 2007-2012 Sienna, 2007-2012 Avalon and 2007-2012 Lexus RX350 name an oil line or hose or the VVT actuator, and 85 explicitly call out the rubber hose. Many go on to engine damage after the oil loss (rod knock, seizure, a replaced engine), and roughly seventy report smoke or fire as hot oil hit the exhaust. Caught at the warning light it is a cheap hose; missed, it can cost the engine.

Check — On any early 2GR-FE car, inspect the VVT-i oil hose for a weeping or hardened rubber section and confirm the oil-pressure warning light works. Treat a sudden oil-pressure light, a knock, or a large oil puddle as stop-driving-now. Ask whether the updated hose has been fitted (see the service-campaign fact).

The most safety-critical recall on the 2012-2017 Camry is water reaching the airbag control module. Recall 13V442000 (2012-2013 Camry and Camry Hybrid, also Avalon and Venza): the air-conditioning condenser drain hose can clog, letting water pool and leak onto the airbag control module and short it -- which can disable the airbags or cause an inadvertent deployment; the free remedy seals the housing and fits a protective cover. Several other build-year-specific safety recalls also touch these cars, so this is a run-the-VIN generation: electric power steering that can fail from a manufacturing-damaged control unit (15V144000, 2015 Camry/Hybrid); a fuel delivery pipe that can leak in the engine bay (14V576000, 2014); an incorrectly manufactured left-front suspension lower arm (14V715000, 2014); a windshield-wiper switch that can short and stop the wipers (13V505000, 2013-2014); plus later airbag-related batches -- an improperly calibrated front-passenger occupant-classification sensor (16V215000, 2016) and knee-airbag fasteners (16V906000, 2017). Most cover narrow production ranges, so the VIN is the only way to know which apply.

Check — Run the VIN through Toyota's recall lookup (or NHTSA's) before purchase and confirm every open campaign is closed -- the fixes are free. On a 2012-2013 car treat the airbag/water recall (13V442000) as the priority; on a 2015 car, the power-steering recall (15V144000).

The signature complaint on the 2012-2017 Camry (XV50) is a torque-converter shudder from the 6-speed automatic. Owners describe a shudder, vibration or "rumble strip" feel under light throttle around 25-55 mph, often with a hesitation or delay when accelerating from a stop or across an intersection -- unnerving in traffic and, in a number of reports, a near-miss. More than two hundred federal POWER TRAIN complaints name the torque converter or a shudder, and they concentrate heavily in the 2012-2014 model years (2012 and 2014 are the peaks; the 2015-2017 cars show far fewer). Owners repeatedly report a Toyota transmission-control software reflash as the first fix, with torque-converter or transmission replacement when the flash did not cure it; some describe the shudder returning afterward. It appears across the mileage range, so it tracks model year more than wear.

Check — On a 2012-2014 car especially, test-drive at light throttle between 25 and 55 mph and feel for a shudder, vibration or hesitation on gentle acceleration; try several stop-and-go pulls. Ask whether the transmission-control software reflash was done and whether the torque converter or transmission was ever replaced, and get the shop records. A car that still shudders after those repairs is a walk-away.
