THINK TWICE

ENGINE is the #1 complaint component on all four Theta II models -- Sonata, Optima, Santa Fe Sport, and Sorento -- by a wide margin. The defining defect is connecting-rod bearing wear: NHTSA recalls 15V568000 (Sonata), 17V224000 (Optima/Sorento) and 17V226000 (Sonata/Santa Fe Sport) trace it to metallic debris left in the crankshaft or machining errors during engine manufacture that restrict oil to the rod bearings. A worn bearing makes a metallic, cyclic knocking noise and progresses to engine seizure and a stall while driving. Dealers replaced the engine or short block under these recalls.

Check — Listen for a metallic knock that tracks engine rpm, especially on a cold start, and check the oil level and service records. Run the VIN through the Hyundai/Kia recall lookup: a documented engine/short-block replacement under 15V568000, 17V224000 or 17V226000 is reassuring, but an open engine recall or an untraceable knock is a walk-away.

Underhood fire is a documented, severe risk on this platform, through two paths. (1) On cars that already received a recall engine replacement, the high-pressure fuel pipe at the pump outlet can be left damaged, misaligned or improperly torqued and leak fuel near an ignition source -- recalls 18V907000 (Optima/Sorento) and 18V934000 (Sonata/Santa Fe Sport). (2) An engine-compartment fire can occur while driving on the Sorento, addressed by recalls 20V750000 and 23V877000, which add Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) software and replace the engine as necessary. Hundreds of these vehicles carry a fire-flagged federal complaint.

Check — Confirm via the VIN that EVERY open recall is closed, not just the engine recall: the fuel-pipe fire recalls (18V907000 / 18V934000) apply specifically to cars whose engine was already replaced, so a repaired engine is not the end of the story. Note any oil or fuel smell and confirm the KSDS software update was installed.

Beyond outright bearing failure, the Theta II engines are widely reported to consume oil: more than a thousand federal complaints across the Sonata, Optima, Santa Fe Sport and Sorento describe burning oil, a rapidly dropping oil level, or low-oil warnings between changes. Low oil starves the same connecting-rod bearings that fail on this platform, so oil consumption is both its own problem and an accelerant for the catastrophic one.

Check — Check the oil level and its condition on the dipstick, and ask the seller how much oil the car uses between changes. On a Theta II engine, treat measurable oil consumption as an early warning of bearing wear, not a minor annoyance. Look for oil-consumption test records or a KSDS software update in the service history.
