On the EA888 2.0T the engine itself is the risk, not an afterthought. Across the VW Jetta (2008-2014), GTI (2010-2014), Tiguan (2009-2017) and Audi A4 (2009-2016) windows ENGINE is the top or near-top federal complaint category (1,373 engine complaints across the four), and the two failures that matter are expensive: the gen1-2 timing-chain tensioner, which can destroy the engine, and, on the Audi 2.0T, piston-ring oil consumption. These models are engine-mixed -- the same bodies were also sold with the 2.5L five-cylinder, the TDI diesel, the 1.8T and the VR6 depending on year and trim -- so confirm the car actually has the 2.0T before applying any of this, and note the 2012-2016 US Passat did not use the gen1-2 2.0T at all. A well-maintained EA888 with the updated tensioner and no oil-consumption history is a fine engine; an unmaintained one is a liability.

Check — Confirm the exact engine (VIN or window sticker) -- much of what is sold as a "2.0T problem" does not apply to the 2.5L, TDI or VR6 cars. If it is a gen1-2 2.0T, make the timing-chain tensioner update and, on Audis, the oil-consumption history the two gating questions before anything else.
