Toyota and Lexus ran a service campaign to replace the VVT-i oil hose on early 2GR-FE V6 cars. In the manufacturer's own campaign text, "the rubber portion of the oil supply hose for the VVT-i actuator may degrade over time," causing oil to leak, the oil-pressure light to illuminate and abnormal engine noise; the remedy replaces the hose with an updated part. Check — Ask for proof the VVT-i oil-hose campaign was performed (dealer service records), or have a Toyota/Lexus dealer check the VIN. An early-build car with no record of the updated hose should have the hose replaced at or before purchase -- it is an inexpensive part relative to the engine it protects.

Set the oil hose aside and the 2GR-FE is one of the most trouble-free V6s on the road. On the V6-only members of the family -- Avalon, RX350 and the 2007-2010 Sienna, where every car has this engine -- engine and powertrain complaints are a modest slice of the record and show no dominant internal-failure pattern beyond the oil hose. On the engine-mixed Camry and Highlander much of the raw ENGINE complaint volume belongs to the four-cylinder cars (the 2AZ-FE oil-consumption story), not the 2GR-FE, so confirm the car actually has the V6 before reading those numbers against it. This engine routinely runs past 200k with basic maintenance.

Check — Confirm it is the 2GR-FE V6 (not a four-cylinder) on a Camry or Highlander. At high mileage weigh service history -- oil-change records, timing-chain quiet at idle, transmission shift quality -- over the engine's reputation.
