THINK TWICE

Snap-to-connect (STC) high-pressure oil fitting on late-2004 through 2007 6.0L engines can blow apart, killing the engine instantly at speed with no restart. Complaint text mentions peak in MY2005-2006 trucks.

Check — Hot no-start or long hot crank is the early symptom. Verify the updated threaded fitting (Ford part 4C3Z-9B246-F, under $60) is installed.

The oil cooler clogs and starves the EGR cooler of coolant flow; a ruptured EGR cooler pushes coolant into the intake (white smoke, unexplained coolant loss, hydrolock risk). Both are named components in the 2013 class-action settlement. 44 complaint texts on the 2006 F-250 alone mention EGR or oil cooler.

Check — Unexplained coolant loss with no visible leak; EOT-vs-ECT temperature spread over ~15F at operating temperature indicates a clogging oil cooler.

Torque-to-yield head bolts allow head lift under high cylinder pressure (worse on tuned trucks); blown head gaskets and warped head bolts were alleged in the class action. Head studs ("bulletproofing") are the accepted permanent fix.

Check — Coolant pushed into the degas bottle under heavy load; ask whether head studs were installed and by whom.

Recall 05V270000 (June 2005): wiring on 6.0L diesel trucks can chafe and cause stalling without warning while driving. Produced by NHTSA investigation EA05003.

Fuel injection control module (FICM) fails, often after battery or alternator weakness; presents as hard/no cold starts and rough running, amplified by cold weather. Repair runs $250-750, replacement about $1,000.

Check — Slow or rough cold start; FICM should hold ~48V during crank (measurable at the module).

TSB 062211 (Dec 2006): power steering fluid leak at the jumper line-to-hydroboost connection. The hydraulic circuit is shared with brake boost, so a leak degrades both steering assist and braking.

Check — Fluid seep at the jumper line to the hydroboost unit; low power steering fluid with no other visible source.

Ford issued TSB 06151 (steering wheel oscillation) within the truck's first year; NHTSA ran PE07057 and EA08007 (closed 2009-03, no recall). No Ford recall was ever issued while complaints ran hot through 2011.

Check — Ask whether wobble-related front-end work was already done under TSB guidance; there is no recall to check.

The 6.0L's bad reputation was earned by MY2003-2004: engine-related complaint share for the F-250 fell from 38% (2004) to ~10% (2006-2007). The 2013 class-action settlement covered EGR cooler, oil cooler, injector, and turbo repairs on 2003-2007 trucks to 6 years/135k miles.

Check — Prefer late (2006-2007) 6.0L trucks over 2003-2004 builds; service history matters more than the badge.
